The grand-daughter has dirt on her face and hands and her shirt is grubby. She is very anxious and worried about her grandmother and asks questions about every intervention that is done, including temperature, blood pressure, oxygen, ECG, etc. She is very concerned about her grandmother’s pain and asks for pain medication. She asks questions like: “Can’t you do something for her pain?” “Why are you taking blood from her?” “When will the blood test be back?” “What are you looking for on this machine?” “Why is she sweating so much”? “Is she bad?” When you give her grandmother Nitroglycerin, she asks: “What are you putting under her tongue?” and /or ‘What does that do for her?”How will you ensure a culturally safe environment in this situation?  Scenario 2: An Aged Care HomePeople involved: You as the Nurse and a Torres Strait Islander family – a young Man in wheelchair, his Uncle and Sister.Situation: The young Man has been cared for by extended family for some years in his remote community (he has a diagnosis of pre-Huntington’s chorea) – but now he needs twenty-four-hour care. The family live in the same city but not close to the Aged Care Facility and his admission is as a last resort. You have been assigned as his Nurse and have just explained the visiting arrangements. You notice that his sister becomes visibly distressed.How will you continue the conversation with the family? What is your evaluation of what is needed to provide a culturally safe service for the young man and his family?  Scenario 3: A Diabetes ClinicPeople involved: You as the Nurse, an older Aboriginal man and his Aboriginal carerSituation: You have been nursing for two years now and just completed a Diabetes Workshop as professional development for a new role you have started in the Diabetes Clinic, which included a section on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and diabetes. Some of the information you learn at the workshop includes that: diabetics require good eye-sight to read the ingredients on food packets, people taking medication must be able to read labels to ensure they take the right type and dose, and older Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people are more likely to be carers of younger children than older people in the wider community.How would you start having a culturally safe first interview with this man and his carer?
