You will then present this information in the form of a genogram and an ecomap. In Part 2, you will conduct a windshield survey of the community in which your chosen family resides.

Part 1: Abuse and Neglect: Orientation Project

Select a family in your community who will be the subjects of this course’s assessments. (1 clinical hour)

Review the key points of therapeutic conversation.

Family composition

Write a 500-word summary of your assessment. Include a brief overview of the family members.

Create?a genogram of the family structure and an ecomap depicting the family’s relationship with world and the factors that impact the family. You can create them in Word or as a PowerPoint® as you would with a mind map. (1 clinical hour)

Note: Remove all personally identifying information, such as the family members’ names. Refer to family members by initials only.

Review the Windshield Survey Aid. 

Review the Windshield Survey Resources from the Week 1 Learning Activities. 

Observe?your family’s community by traveling around the area.

Consider?aspects of the community that could affect residents’ health and any?Healthy People Leading Health Indicators?that may be applicable to the community.

Conduct?a?windshield survey?that addresses the following components:?(5 clinical hours)

Age, nature, and condition of the community’s available housing

Infrastructure needs (e.g., roads, bridges, streetlights)

Presence of functioning businesses and industrial facilities

Location, condition, and use of public spaces

Location and condition of public buildings (e.g., the city or town hall, courthouse)

Location and condition of available schools

Amount of activity on the streets at various times of the day, week, or year

Noise level in various parts of the community

Volume of traffic at various times of day

Walkability and bikeability of the community

Cost and accessibility of public transportation

Availability of social service centers, public libraries, parks, places of worship, community centers, and recreation centers

Availability of health care facilities and resources

Resources for food and nutrition, including the presence of grocery stores and/or food deserts

Services available to the homeless population

Extent of police and fire services

 Compile your windshield survey data to include: (3 clinical hours)

Data overview of all community components as identified in the Community Tool Box resource, linked in the Week 1 Learning Activities

Strengths of community as evidenced by the windshield survey

Weaknesses (gaps in service) as evidenced by the windshield survey

Develop 1 family nursing diagnosis based on an identified gap in community resources as an indicator of potential poor health outcomes.

Create a 10-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation, with speaker notes, in which you summarize the results of your windshield survey.

Note: The slides should only contain essential information and as little text as possible. Do not design a slide presentation made up of long bullet points. Your speaker notes convey the details you would give if you were presenting. For additional help, view Microsoft’s training video on how to create speaker notes. Compile your summary, genogram, and ecomap from Part 1 and your windshield survey presentation from Part 2 for submission.
