PNUR1257 – Professional Nursing 2 Research-based practice paper
Research-based practice (or Evidence-Informed practice) are terms you will hear frequently. Nurses use research studies to find out answers about their health care practice and to improve the quality and efficiency of the care they provide to their patients. It is essential that nurses use strong, high-quality, evidence-informed research to direct their practice. A systematic approach to reading and critiquing a research article serves as a foundation for translating evidence into practice and policy. Every nurse can acquire this skill. Therefore, throughout your Practical Nursing program and when you graduate, you will need to be able to read, review and critique research articles.

Research Assignment Guidelines
Step 1: Select one study from those listed below and find it in the LRC databases. Determine the credibility of the article using the same questionnaire you used in class.
- ‘Dining culture change in long-term care homes: Transitioning to resident-centered and relational meals’ by Ducak, Keller and Sweatman (2015)
Step 2: Read your chosen study several times to make sure you understand the content – topic, research methodology, results, impact on nursing, and so on.
- Using the reference list at the back of your chosen article, as well as the LRC databases, find additional research articles with a similar focus to provide support and additional context for the study. This helps to establish what is, and what is not known about the research study, and may give perspective on how this study can be used in your nursing practice in the future.
- Ensure that the articles you choose to support your comments have met the criteria for credibility as addressed in class.
Step 3: Writing the essay
- This is a maximum of 5-page scholarly paper, EXCLUDING cover page and reference page.
- You can use ‘I’, the first person. You are asked to express your view based on theory and knowledge acquired from your readings.
- An introduction is needed with a clear statement of the purpose of the paper, why you are writing this paper and how the paper will be developed.
Remember, this is NOT a paper about the subject matter of the chosen article. Rather this is a demonstration of your ability to read, review and critique the research study you have chosen, as well as being able to support your comments using additional research articles.
- The bulk of the paper should address the following:
- Have you clearly identified the purpose of this paper?
- What research approach (method/design) was used for the chosen study? Define the method used and identify why you think it was chosen for this particular study?
- How did the review of additional research articles relate to the study and support your comments?
- What impact will this study, as well as reading research in general, have on your future practice and on nursing practice as a whole?
- Your conclusion should summarize the purpose of your paper and clearly address how you demonstrated your ability to review and critique a research study.
- Your reference page will include research articles to support your statements. These will be credible, peer reviewed article/studies found using Conestoga College’s LRC databases, which will be cited in-text and referenced as per APA@Conestoga. Refer to the rubric for the number of scholarly research articles required for each level.
- Your paper should be filled with critical thinking, personal insight, and original thoughts supported with evidence.
- Proofread your paper.
Step 4: Formatting the assignment:
- A cover page, using the template posted on Learning Commons APA@Conestoga
- The essay (introduction, main body, and conclusion)
- References
___________________________________________________________________
You need to cite your sources as per APA@Conestoga
- Each time you use someone else’s words.
- Each time you use someone else’s thoughts and point of view.
- Each time you add information which are not your own original thoughts.
- It may mean that you will cite after individual phrases at times.
If you do not cite the sources, you are plagiarizing.
- If you are using all the same words, that is a direct quote and needs to be cited.
- If you are changing the wording but have used the same idea(s), you need to cite as you are paraphrasing.
Make sure you know how to do this correctly. If you are found to have plagiarized, you could be assessed with professional misconduct and a failing grade will be assigned.
