Week 6 Discussion
Prescriptive Authority: State Regulations
To get started, review the Nurse Practitioner Interactive Map.
In your initial post, please identify the prescriptive authority regulations in the state where you are going to practice. Are there any restrictions, supervision, or collaboration required from a physician? If so, please explain. If you will be practicing in multiple states, do the regulations in those states differ? If you are in a clinical placement, please ask your preceptors about the prescriptive regulations and if an agreement is needed. If so, ask to see a copy of the agreement so that you can review what will be required when you begin to practice. Share with one another on the discussion board what you have found. If you are precepting at more than one facility, discuss whether these agreements differ at all, what your thoughts are about any differences, and which agreements you like best.

Week 13 Discussion
APRN Political Action State Initiatives
Using the NP Association links in the Nurse Practitioner Interactive Map, identify your state NP association and the current political action initiatives they are currently working on. State professional organizations will have an advocacy team working on the state initiatives determined by the organization, so look for an advocacy tab, political action coalition (PAC) tab, or policy issues tab on the home website.
How do these issues restrict your practice and how will your practice change if these issues are resolved?
Identify your role in addressing these political movements.
If your state NP association does not have any political action initiatives, look at either a national professional organization’s political initiatives, such as AANP, or a state health initiative, such as immunization rate, obesity rate, texting laws or the like and complete the same instructions.

Week 14 Discussion
Practical/Clinical Issue
After reviewing the 2012 QSEN Graduate Competencies, identify a quality/safety issue that you have seen in your practice or clinical setting.
Explain to your classmates the issue you have identified and the reasons why it is an issue. Include the potential negative outcomes that can arise if the issue is not resolved.
For example, you notice that the provider is not following the American Cancer Society’s recommendation for cervical cancer screening. This issue in quality competency can lead to under-testing, over-testing, increased cost, and increased potential for surgical procedures. These factors can have negative consequences, such as higher risk for preterm labor or infertility.
As you create your post, review the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of the relevant competency regarding the quality/safety issue you have identified.
Remember: The material and feedback from this assignment will be used in Week 15 Assignment 1: SWOT Analysis.

Week 1 Assignment 1
Elevator Speech on the Role of the NP
Instructions
The purpose of this assignment is to prepare you as future APRNs to communicate your professional role and clarify the difference between APRNs and other advanced practice healthcare providers. Once you have presented this, you will work on making this more concise and compelling since you will be asked these questions in your new role.
Using Screencast-O-Matic, Zoom, or YouTube, create a video that is three to five minutes in length and answers the following questions:
What is a Nurse Practitioner?
How does a Nurse Practitioner differ from a Physician Assistant?
How does a Nurse Practitioner differ from a Physician?
Why don’t you just become a physician?
If you have never recorded a presentation, Screencast-O-Matic is a free, easy-to-use tool recommended for this purpose. Instructional videos on how to use Screencast-O-Matic are available at Screencast-O-Matic Help Videos.
After your recording is complete, follow these instructions to create an unlisted YouTube video. You will need the YouTube video URL for this assignment. The best way to submit your YouTube video URL is to copy and paste the hyperlink URL for the YouTube video into a Word document and submit this to the Assignment Dropbox. Your faculty will access your video via the link. Do not upload a video file (mp4).
For references, if you have created a PowerPoint for your presentation, please add your references on the last slide. If you have chosen not to create a PPT, then you may add your references to the Word document that contains your YouTube video URL. Please make sure that you adhere to current APA guidelines and submit at least three scholarly references per the Grading Rubric.
Please refer to the Grading Rubric for details on how this activity will be graded.

Week 1 Assignment 2
Individual Professional Practice Document: NP Title, Definition, and Consensus Model
During this course, you will be developing an Individual Professional Practice Document (IPPD) that will identify the regulations, requirements, certification, and rules of the state in which you plan to practice as an APRN upon graduation. As you complete certain modules, you will be asked to add to the IPPD, so it is essential that you keep it handy and edit along the way as you receive feedback from your faculty. Adding to the document with each assignment will produce a complete document by the end of the course. For this assignment, use the Individual Professional Practice Document (Word). Please only submit Week 1 information.
Identify the following:
Your name
APRN specialty foci
State you plan to practice as an APRN
The state’s definition of a Nurse Practitioner. See Appendix 1A in Buppert text.
The title allowed by that state. See Appendix 1B in Buppert text.
Using the Map feature on the NCSBN APRN Consensus Model link, write a summary of how the state you plan to practice in is meeting the components of the consensus model. Refer to the Nurse Practice Act for details related to the state.
If you live close to the border of another state and plan to practice or already practice in that state, it is strongly recommended that you have a separate document for that state as well. Not all states have the same regulations and requirements.
Please refer to the Grading Rubric for details on how this activity will be graded.
In order for this assignment to be considered complete, you will need to address all the prompts and write a summary related to the APRN Consensus Model by Day 7.

Week 3 Assignment
Role-Specific Competency Self Assessment
Using the role-specific competencies for the specialization track you are enrolled in, please complete the Competency Self-Assessment table provided for that specialization track. For this assignment, you are to review the population-specific competencies from NONPF, reviewing the curriculum content column (far right) of that document (located in Instructional Materials). In your review of that information, please indicate examples in column three of the self-assessment table of coursework, clinical, or experiences that moved you toward attainment of that competency while in your program. In the fourth column, please indicate areas you need to further develop or have further exposure to, based on the curriculum content identified in the NONPF document, where applicable (see competency example Women’s Health Role – Specific Competency Self-Assessment (PDF).

Week 6 Assignment
Individual Professional Practice Document: Prescriptive Authority
Instructions
After passing your certification exam, the next step is to obtain your Nurse Practitioner (RN/NP) license. Then you should apply for prescriptive authority in the state in which you plan to practice. In some states, this requires a collaborating/ supervising physician; in some states, there are restrictions for NP prescribing. After you obtain a state prescriptive license, you must apply for a federal drug enforcement administration (DEA) certificate so that you can prescribe controlled substances. Use the following resources to complete this week’s IPPD assignment
Nurse Practitioner Interactive Map
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
DEA Forms and Applications
Using the document you started in Week 1 Assignment 2: Individual Professional Practice Document: NP Title, Definition, and Consensus Model and added to in Week 5 Assignment 1: Individual Professional Practice Document: Scope of Practice,, please add the following information to the Week 6 area. In some states, prescriptive authority is explained in the Board of Nursing (BON) and the Department of Public Health (DPH), so you might have to search the DPH website as well. You must also meet the federal DEA regulations for your state to be licensed to prescribe controlled substances.
What are the prescriptive authority requirements for the state in which you intend to practice? Is there a MD collaborative or supervisory regulation related to non-controlled substances or controlled substances? Are there any restrictions for NP prescriptive practice? Does the state utilize a system-wide drug monitoring program to assist with the prevention of overprescribing?
Include a hyperlink to the state prescriptive authority regulations.
Does the state allow DEA licensure? What are the requirements to obtain a DEA certificate? Are there any MD collaborative/ supervisory regulations related to controlled substance prescribing? Are there any restrictions to prescribing controlled substances, including opioids and naloxone authority?

This reflection will not be shared with your classmates, because the goal of this exercise is to have you truly reflect on a situation that was unethical, immoral, negligent, or the like so that you can identify appropriate actions if put in the same position in the future.
Please refer to the Grading Rubric for details on how this activity will be graded.
