Need a response to this reflection post:  Week 4 ReflectionThus far, this clinical rotation has been my favorite. I thought in the beginning that I wanted to become a hospitalist when I finish with the program, but I am leaning more towards primary care. I like the way that you get to know the patient and help them understand the treatment plan and guide them all the way to the end of treatment. I especially like that you get to watch the progress and see the patient’s happiness with their health. I also like to educate the patient when they do not follow their treatment plan and help them get back on track. The biggest challenge for me is learning to bill correctly and learning a new system to document with. My preceptor this quarter, Dana, is phenomenal at teaching about billing. Until this quarter, billing was not really a part of the process. Dana is opening her own practice and being a part of that is extremely exciting. She specializes in primary care and weight loss management.I am not familiar with weight loss management drugs. Wegovy is a drug that she prescribes, and it requires a “prior authorization” for most clients. Wegovy works by mimicking hormones in the brain that make you feel full. If you have heard of the medication Ozempic, Wegovy is just a bigger dose of Ozempic that aids in weight loss. Wegovy is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. GLP-1 is the physical regulator of appetite and hunger. Wegovy is a long-term, FDA approved drug to assist in losing weight. (Singh et al., 2021) The prior authorization is required because of the expense of the drug. The drug comes in a self-injecting pen and the cost is approximately $1600.00 per pen. Patients that are on the medication currently in the clinic are losing anywhere from 10-25 pounds during the first month. The biggest complaint from patients are the side effects of Wegovy, which are abdominal pain and nausea during the first couple of weeks. These are listed as the most common side effects of the medication. As I continue to work with Dana over the next 6 weeks this quarter and 10 weeks the next quarter, I plan to become more familiar with billing and getting more familiar with weight loss therapy. It is important to know about the medications before prescribing them to the patient. It is very important to know if there are any drug-to-drug interactions with medications prior to prescribing them, because it is up to me to ensure that I am not prescribing something that is going to cause harm. So, my goal over the next quarter and a half is to become more familiar with medications for weight loss and continue to become more familiar with day-to-day practice in the clinic, because now I am leaning more towards primary care. Thanks,Derrick Health Science Science Nursing NSG 5540 Share QuestionEmailCopy link Comments (0)
