Auscultation techniques will be used in assessment of the neck. Examination of the eyes involves tests of visual acuity, visual fields, and extraocular muscle function. A penlight can be used to assist to with inspection of the external eye structures, anterior eyeball structures, throat, and mouth. An opthalmoscope is needed for examination of ocular fundus. An otoscope is needed to examine the external ear canal and tympanic membrane. If you do not have access to an opthalmoscope or otoscope, you can omit that portion of the physical examination on your patient.

Developmental competence regarding differences in infants, children, adolescents, pregnant women, and aging adults is especially important in this module.
