There are two parts to this assignment.  In order to be successful the student needs to:

1.   Develop a professional CV (Curriculum Vita) which means course of life in Latin

  • There are three major differences between CVs and resumes: the length, the purpose, and the layout.
  •  A CV is very detailed and can stretch well beyond two pages.  A CV  is an in-depth document that can be laid out over two or more pages and it contains a high level of detail about your achievements, a great deal more than just a career biography. The CV covers your education as well as any other accomplishments like publications, awards, honors, etc. A CV has a clear chronological order, listing the whole career of the individual.
  • resume is a brief summary of your skills and experience over one or two pages.
  • A professional NP CV/Resume does not include time working in any position outside of an RN.  It does not include time spent as an MA, lab tech or unit secretary.

2.  Develop an appropriate introductory letter to a potential employer’s office manager, that is 1-2 pages at most.  Within the body of the letter, you should identify yourself as a new NP, tell the employer why you are interested in the position, and your qualifications.  Offer a brief personal philosophy of the  Advance Practice Nursing (APN) role, what you can contribute to the practice, potential obstacles you foresee and professional goals. You should address the letter to the “Office Manager” at either your current place of employment or for a position that you would like to have with another employer.  Addressing a letter to a physician with whom you have worked with and not their office manager is not appropriate.

Course Outcomes

This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:

  1.  Evaluate the APN roles, NP core competencies and Master’s essentials (CO1)
  2.  Identify individual attributes of the Professional Nurse Practitioner (CO6)

Points

This assignment is worth a total of 25 points.  15 points for the CV or resume and 10 points for the cover letter.

Directions:

  • Review the rubric for the assignment prior to developing the CV and cover letter.
  • Follow APA format in the development of the CV see https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/job_search_writing/resumes_and_vitas/writing_the_cv.html  (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. If you do not have all the criteria for a CV, ie. no publications, then identify the criteria (ie.  Publications) and place an N/Abehind it.  You will lose points for not identifying all of the criteria of a CV.

CV Criteria:

  •  Identifying Information: name, address, phone numbers, and e-mail address.
  •  Education: List degrees, majors, institutions, and dates of completion (or expected date) in reverse chronological order (most recent first). Also include your minors, subfields, and honors if any.  Awards, fellowships, scholarships, grants, Membership in honorary societies.
  • Professional experience. Name of institution, city and state, type of unit, Professional title, and role.  Dates of employment.  Reverse chronological order is again the rule. Professional experience is not working as a PCA or unit clerk; nor is it your time at Amazon.
  • Publications, invited papers, exhibits, conference presentations, etc.: this category may be modified to read “Papers and Publications,” “Programs and Workshops” or other titles that accurately reflect the professional work you have produced in your discipline. These should be arranged in reverse chronological order and may be subdivided into sections. You may include works in progress.
  • Community Service:  Current or past activities in reverse chronological order.
  •  Memberships or professional affiliations: list all professional groups to which you belong and any offices you have held.
  • Languages: list all languages you read and speak and note those in which you are fluent
  • If any category does not apply to you, such as presentations or languages then mark it as N/A.

Develop an appropriate introductory letter to either the office manager or Department of Nursing where you currently work, or to a potential employer’s office manager. Addressing a letter to a physician with whom you have worked with, and not their office manager is not appropriate. Within the body of the letter, you should identify yourself as a new NP, and where you currently work.  Identify why you are interested in the position, your qualifications and what you can contribute to the practice.  Offer a brief personal philosophy of the  Advance Practice Nursing (APN) role.  Philosophies of nursing are statements of beliefs about nursing and the expressions of values that are used as bases for thinking and activity.  The personal philosophy of Advanced Practice Nursing must integrate the elements of nursing, the individual, the environment, health, and illness.  Conclude with what you can contribute to the practice, any potential obstacles you foresee, and your goals for professional development.

  • The letter should be no more than two typewritten double spaced pages in APA format.
  • Follow the directions and grading criteria closely. Any questions about this paper should be directed to your course professor.
